I've lost count of how many nights I've checked the forecast one more time only to see to a solid gray ceiling instead of the clear window that was promised twelve hours earlier. It's felt like a genuinely brutal stretch for anyone trying to image from an Atlanta backyard this summer, and I finally sat down with the actual National Weather Service data instead of just venting about it — because I wanted to know if this was really as bad as it felt, or if I was just impatient. No surprise this is not in my head.

1. It's Not Just You — the Numbers Back It Up 🔭

According to NWS Peachtree City's rainfall departure report, current through August 14, 2026, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has picked up 16.09 inches of rain over the last 90 days against a normal of 12.92 inches — that's 125% of normal, or 3.17 inches above where it should be. Over the last 60 days ran 112% of normal, and the last 30 days came in at 107%. This has been a sustained wet stretch, not one bad weekend.

And it's not just the Atlanta airport. Peachtree Dekalb Airport (PDK), which sits a lot closer to most of intown Atlanta, logged 16.39 inches over the same 90-day window against a normal of 13.32 — 123% of normal. Charlie Brown Airport came in at 116%. Three different stations around the metro, all telling the same story: this has been a genuinely soggy summer, and soggy means overcast, and overcast means the Seestar's been sitting on the shelf a lot more than I'd like.

2. The Whiplash: From Extreme Drought to Washed-Out Summer

Here's the part that actually surprised me when I dug into it. This wet stretch didn't happen in isolation — it followed one of the driest winters Atlanta has ever recorded. Only 7.53 inches of rain fell between December 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026, roughly half the seasonal average, good for a top-5 driest winter on record. Spring wasn't much better: just 6.62 inches fell from March 1 through mid-May, a top-10 driest spring. As of the May 12, 2026 U.S. Drought Monitor, Metro Atlanta was sitting in Extreme Drought (D3), with Exceptional Drought (D4) — the worst category there is — grinding away at south Georgia.

Then the switch flipped. Whatever pattern was keeping Georgia dry through the winter and spring broke sometime in late spring, and the same NWS data shows it: the year-to-date rainfall total is still only 86% of normal-to-date, and just 55% of the full annual normal, because the deficit dug in December through May was so deep. But almost all of the rain Atlanta has picked up all year landed in this one 90-day window. We didn't gradually catch up — we went from a genuine drought to a genuine deluge with barely a transition in between, and I've been trying to image through both ends of that whiplash.

3. What This Actually Costs You in Clear-Sky Nights 🌌

Rainfall totals don't translate one-to-one into lost imaging nights — you can get a fast-moving evening storm that clears out to a gorgeous sky by 10pm, and you can also get a bone-dry night that's still a hazy, high-cloud mess from a system two states away. But there's a real relationship between "125% of normal rainfall" and "way fewer usable nights," because the same weather systems that dump rain also drag extended overcast and high humidity along with them. A quick-moving pop-up thunderstorm costs you one evening. The kind of persistent, repeating frontal pattern that's been sitting over Georgia for three months costs you a week at a time.

I check the Clear Sky Chart (cleardarksky.com) most nights before I even think about setting up, and this summer it's been a lot more red and yellow blocks than the blue I actually want to see. When I do get a genuine opening, humidity's usually still high enough that dew becomes its own fight within the first hour — which is a big part of why a dew heater has gone from "nice to have" to "actually necessary" gear on my setup this year, more on that below.

Should You Just Wait It Out Until Fall?

Honestly, mostly yes, if your patience allows it. The stretch that's historically kindest to Atlanta stargazers is fall into early winter — October and November tend to bring drier, more stable air once the humid, storm-prone summer pattern breaks down, which lines up with why I keep saying my best sessions tend to cluster outside of peak summer. That's not a guarantee this particular year behaves like the long-term average — nothing about this year has gone by the long-term average — but it's the honest historical trend.

In the meantime, the move is to stop waiting for a beautiful five-night forecast that isn't coming and start treating any single clear window as worth grabbing immediately, even if it's just two or three hours before the next band of clouds rolls back in. That's exactly the kind of situation where a smart scope's whole pitch — point, focus, stack, done — actually pays for itself over a traditional rig that needs a long polar-alignment routine before it can start collecting photons.
